As we bid farewell to the swaying palm trees and welcome our version of autumn in Key West, we usher in a unique winter experience. Herein our beautiful, year-round warm climate, we find ourselves transitioning into a season of giving, a season that promises to bring comfort and joy to those we serve.
While we may not contend with snowdrifts or icy roads, winter still presents its challenges, especially for those experiencing homelessness. The dip in temperatures, chilly evenings, and damp conditions make life even more difficult for the vulnerable individuals and families who rely on our shelter.
This winter, we're launching our "Warmth and Joy" campaign to ensure that everyone who turns to us finds a warm, secure, and caring environment. We aim to provide warm clothing, blankets, nourishing meals, and a safe refuge from the elements. Your support, whether through monetary donations or in-kind contributions, makes all of this possible.
In the spirit of the upcoming holiday season, we are thrilled to introduce our "Christmas for Kids" initiative. Even in our sunny corner of the world, many children dream of a special Christmas, and you can help make those dreams a reality. We are seeking funds, gift cards, and presents to bring smiles to their faces during this festive time.
Donate: Your monetary contributions are the lifeblood of our shelter, ensuring that we can provide shelter, nourishment, and essential services. Every dollar counts.
Gift Cards: Gift cards offer a sense of normalcy and empowerment to our residents.
Presents for Kids: Consider donating new, unwrapped toys and gifts for children ages 3 to 17. Together, let's make their Christmas unforgettable.
Your unwavering support has been the foundation of the work we do at Samuel's House, and we are profoundly grateful for your continued trust and generosity. As we embrace this unique winter season in sunny Monroe County, let's unite to provide comfort, hope, and the promise of a brighter future to those in need.

Today Elmira is semi-retired and although she remains involved with Samuel’s House as a project administrator and consultant, she has passed the torch to Executive Director Tara Salinas.
Tara Salinas is also a Key West Native. She received her Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Florida. She has worked with Samuel's House for seven years, learned from Elmira as well as worked through every level of case management, became Deputy Director and is now proudly serving as the Executive Director.
"I love my job and the amazing, dedicated women I get to work with. Each day provides a new challenge and ultimately an opportunity to change the course of someone's life for the better."
In 1985, Key West native Elmira Leto had a calling to minister to women in jail as they transitioned out of incarceration. This call to action was the beginning of what would eventually become Samuel's House, Inc. consisting of 3 programs that serve our community in various stages of support from emergency shelter to transitional supportive and on to permanent supportive and then long term residential housing.
After a decade of assisting women with their transition from jail, Elmira recognized there was also a growing need to assist these women with housing as they had nowhere to go. There was an increase in the number of homeless women due to a variety of circumstances including domestic violence, loss of employment, incarceration, substance abuse, mental and physical illness and other traumatic life events. The journey to provide support for homeless women became a priority.
In early August 1999, Elmira along with sixteen concerned citizens incorporated Samuel's House, Inc. as a 501(C)3 nonprofit organization with a Board of Directors. She decided to retire from her small business, Leto's Interiors and lead the effort to create Samuel’s House.
On October 1, 1999 Elmira converted her business located at the corner of Truman Avenue and Eisenhower Street into The "Mary Spottswood Women's Center" which would serve as an emergency shelter for homeless women and women with children.
Tremendous support from the community offered an opportunity to take over and renovate a leased building located within the Poinciana Housing Complex. Additional support resulted in quick renovation of the newly leased building at 1614 Truesdell Court and in December 2001, the Samuel's House "Mary Spottswood Women’s Center" opened its doors.
In June 2007, Samuel's House opened its second facility, a 16 bed transitional to long-term housing facility called "Kathy’s Hope". This facility was designated to recovery from alcohol and drug abuse for women and women with children who have been diagnosed with co-occurring disorders and women requiring a supportive environment.
In December 2010, the third facility was opened named Casa de Meredith. This facility was named in loving memory for Meredith Higgs. This building is comprised of seven two bedroom apartments and two efficiency apartments. Casa de Meredith offers affordable structured and supportive permanent housing opportunities for women, women with children, men with children and intact families.
Samuel's House Inc. is an active member of the Monroe County Homeless Services Continuum of Care and is the recipient of funding from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Florida Department of Children and Families, the Monroe County Sheriff's Department, the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners, the Klaus Murphy Foundation and other family and private foundations including numerous businesses and individuals in our community who believe in and support our mission.
As the leaves fall and the air turns crisper, we’re reminded of the warmth and compassion that can light up even the coldest of days. November is a time for gratitude and reflection, a season of thanks that smoothly transitions into a season of giving.
At Samuel's House we embrace this spirit year-round, but this November, we invite you to join us in making a difference in the lives of homeless women and children.
This November, we’re thankful for the unwavering support of our community, the tireless dedication of our volunteers, and the strength and resilience of the women and children we serve. Your kindness and generosity have made it possible for us to provide shelter, safety, and hope to those in need.
Here’s how you can help us make this season even more special:
1. Donate: Your monetary contributions make a significant impact. Whether it’s a one-time gift or a monthly donation, every dollar helps provide essential services and resources to those who rely on us.
2. Volunteer: Consider donating your time and skills. Volunteers are the heartbeat of our organization, and your presence can bring smiles and hope to those who need it most.
3. In-Kind Donations: This season, we welcome items like warm blankets, winter clothing, and non-perishable food items. Your contributions directly support our residents.
4. Spread the Word: Share our mission with friends and family. The more people who know about our cause, the more support we can garner.
5. Participate in Fundraising Events: Keep an eye out for our special events this holiday season and join us in fundraising efforts.
Join us in spreading warmth, hope, and love during this season of thanks and giving. Together, we can make a real difference in the lives of the most vulnerable in our community.
Thank you for your support!

On Veterans Day, we come together to express our deep gratitude and respect for the brave men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. These dedicated individuals have sacrificed so much to protect our freedoms and way of life, and it’s our duty to recognize and honor their service.
Veterans Day, observed on November 11th, marks the end of World War I and pays tribute to all American veterans, living or deceased. It’s a time to reflect on the immense sacrifices they’ve made, the hardships they’ve endured, and the commitment they’ve shown to our nation. Let us remember that the freedom and security we enjoy today are a direct result of their selfless service. Whether they served in times of peace or during conflict, their contributions to our country are immeasurable. As we go about our daily lives, let’s not forget the courage, resilience, and strength of our veterans. Reach out to a veteran you know, listen to their stories, and simply say, “Thank you for your service.”
Together, we can ensure that our veterans feel the appreciation and recognition they truly deserve.
